'An X-ceptional Yarn' is Special Research available to paid Pokémon Go Tour Kalos Global 2026 ticket holders.
Available upon logging into Pokémon Go during the weekend's event hours, it has a branching path for you to take - X Version or Y Version - each with a unique rewards and encounters.

X Version or Y Version Choose a Path differences
Before you begin, you have to choose between X Version or Y Version. The differences are as follows:
- A different medal (X Version or Y Version)
- Xerneas or Yveltal-themed rewards, including an encounter, Candy and XL Candy for the respective Pokémon, plus stickers
- Different Pokémon encounters in Step 4:
- X Version: Swirlix and Clauncher
- Y Version: Spritizee and Skrelp
- A change to event Field Research during the Go Tour Kalos event weekend (Spin 12 different PokéStops or Gyms) which award an encounter with either Unown X or Y
In terms of which you should choose, prioritise the rewards over the Pokémon, since you can encounter Xerneas and Yveltal in Raids all weekend, as well as in future Pokémon Go events. If you are shiny hunting Unown X or Y, that should be a consideration, too.
Personally, since I had a decent Special Background Xerneas from London Go Fest 2023 and wanted extra XL Candy to help level it up, I went with the X Version choice.

- Catch 60 Pokémon originally discovered in the Kalos region (reward: Charizard)
- Spin 20 different PokéStops or Gyms (reward: 200 Charizard Mega Energy)
- Evolve a Mega Pokémon (reward: 6 Charmander Candy)
End rewards: 6 Charmander Candy, 6 Charmander XL Candy
'An X-ceptional Yarn' Special Research step 3/5
- Send 6 Gifts and add a sticker to each (reward: 3 Golden Razz Berry)
- Open 6 Gifts (reward: 3 Silver Pinap Berry)
- Catch a Scatterbug (reward: 3 Incense)
End rewards: Scatterbug (Icy Snow) encounter, 664 XP
'An X-ceptional Yarn' Special Research step 4/5
- The first step depends on your choice:
- X Version: Power Up Dark-type Pokémon 10 times (reward: Swirlix encounter)
- Y Version: Power Up Fairy-type Pokémon 10 times (reward: Spritzee encounter)
- Mega Evolve a Pokémon (reward: Clauncher for X choice, Skrelp for Y choice)
- Win a Mega Raid (reward: 6 Rare Candy)
End rewards: Unown X or Y encounter depending on your choice, 12 Unown Candy

- Power up Legendary or Mythical Pokémon 6 times (reward: 716 or 717 Stardust)
- Catch 12 different species of Pokémon (reward: 716 XP or 717 XP)
- Win a five-star raid (reward: 6 Rare Candy)
End rewards: Xerneas or Yveltal encounter, 12 Xerneas or Yveltal Candy, 12 Xerneas or Yveltal XL Candy
Remember, as Special Research, there is no time limit to completing the above. Once you have finished the final step, then the Shiny Diancie Masterwork Special Research will unlock.
