What's the best Buddy choice for Zorua Community Day in Pokémon Go?

Saturday's Zorua Community Day features a twist we haven't seen in a Community Day event before: the ability to customise what Pokémon you're encountering.

As Zorua copies your Buddy appearance in the wild, it means you can get an afternoon of easy Excellent Throws with the right choice - which is particularly useful considering the 3x Catch XP bonus during the 2pm to 5pm event hours. If you're playing effectively - landing consistent Excellent Throws, using a Lucky Egg - then it's possible to get millions of XP on the day.

This guide features my thoughts on the best Buddy to pick during Zorua Community Day in Pokémon Go this Saturday. Plus, for paying subscribers, at look at some more left field considerations - including why you should ignore a 'steel chair Zorua' pick, what happens if you Buddy up with Zorua on Zorua Community Day (no, the game doesn't crash!), and for those who don't want to take it too seriously, some more comical suggestions to litter the map with.

Zorua Community Day best Buddy for Excellent Throws

If you want the best Buddy for Zorua for landing Excellent Throws, then you want to one with a large circle to aim for - but one that's not too close that it's impractical (looking at you, Gothita).

My picks for the best Buddy choices for Excellent Throws include:

There's a few options here to try, and are all Pokémon I've found easy to perform Excellent Throws on over the years. (If you were wondering how I came up with the list, it's one I've maintained over the years for whenever I reach a 'make X Excellent Throws' task, such as the dreaded 999 Throws for the legacy Level 50 requirement.)

What feels right, however, is partly down to personal preference, hence the wide array of suggestions. Personally? Wailmer and Ponyta (Kanto) will be my first choices, and will go from there if they don't quite work on the day.

When you have settled on your choice, make sure you stack some Lucky Eggs to make use of that 3x Catch XP bonus.

Don't forget to also have a Mega Evolution active for additional Catch Candy. With Zorua's Dark-typing, consider the likes of Gyarados, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Sableye and Absol. Pick whichever's highest for the most gains.

While that 3x Catch XP bonus should be your focus, if you're not fussed about XP, there are some other things to consider. What about trying a Buddy of a different size, such as for the infamous 'steel chair Zorua' trick? What happens if when you encounter a Zorua when Zorua is your Buddy? And what are some more left field suggestions to try out for a laugh?
