Watch the opening hour of Voidling Bound (played on a Steam Deck)

Plus early impressions of the sci-fi action shooter with monster collecting elements, out now on PC.

From the off, my intention for One More Catch is to slowly expand beyond Pokémon to cover other monster taming and collecting games. I started that in April with Monster Crown: Sin Eater on YouTube, and am continuing with Voidling Bound, out on PC today and coming to consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2) at some point in the future.

What is Voidling Bound? It's a sci-fi action game with monster collecting elements, and it caught my eye for two reasons: one, it's essentially a third-person shooter in how it plays, and not turn-based as most monster tamers tend to be; and two, you have direct control of the creatures you're collecting, evolving and mutating, with each run through a new alien landscape offering new upgrades and eggs for your roster.

You can watch the opening hour in the above video, captured on a Steam Deck hooked up to a display running the game at 1080p at medium settings. Despite not being Deck Verified in time for launch, I'm pleased to report it plays pretty well, which bodes well for the Switch 2 version in particular.

I haven't progressed much beyond the first hour - it's a busy time starting a new gig and prepping for a busy summer of Pokémon Go - but so far, it's good! It feels polished, I can see the potential of the evolution system (and love that upgrades apply to all creatures of a given species, and not just the one you're dealing with there and then) and appreciate that combat and its Diablo-like suite of abilities are easy to get to grips with.

The interesting mashup of genres aside, I'm not sure how deep or complex either the creature collecting or mission variety will develop. But it's fine if it doesn't, as chipping away at missions and working on new evolutions while listening to a podcast is something I'm looking forward to in the days and weeks to come - with the fact that it plays well on Steam Deck helping massively.
