Peridot, the virtual pet simulator created by Niantic not part of the Scopely acquisition alongside Pokémon Go, Monster Hunter Now and Pikmin Bloom, will be closing down later this year.

As explained in an announcement blog post by developer Niantic Spatial, Peridot will no longer support in-app purchases ahead of a removal from app stores in May and servers shutting down in August.

As for the reasons behind the closure, the blog explained how Peridot was "designed to push the absolute limits" of AR technology, with that "level of ambition" coming with trade-offs and "enormous investment".

Peridot has made only $2.9m through in-app purchases since its May 2023 launch, according to Appmagic figures (via mobilegamer.biz).

Though the mobile app is closing, wearable versions of Peridot have since been released on Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro with Hello, Dot, and on Snap's Spectacles with Peridot Beyond, both of which will continue. However, all Dots within the mobile version will left behind, with players encouraged to save "Dot Cards, screenshots and videos of your creatures" before servers close.

The announcement also mentioned whether Ingress will face a similar fate. "This decision was made independently and has no bearing on Ingress," it said. "Ingress remains active and will not be impacted in any way by the winding down of Peridot mobile."

When is Peridot shutting down?

The Peridot shutdown timeline is as follows:

  • 23rd April, 2026: In-app purchases disabled, with remaining items only available to buy with in-game currency
  • 14th May, 2026: Peridot mobile will be removed from App Store and Google Play
  • 31st August, 2026: Peridot mobile servers will close
