Pokémon Go players have received a free quest rewarding a Lucky Egg - but no one knows why.

Rolling out today (26th October), players can find a quest simply titled 'Timed Research' in the Event tab of their questlog, which can be quickly claimed to reward the item.

At the time of writing, there has been no indication in-game or from Scopely Explore as to why this has been given out.

The timing before this week's Halloween event suggests it's not another one million Stardust-style giveaway. Otherwise, my best guess is it's compensation for "network issues" from last week:

I've messaged Scopely Explore to see if there's any official comment. Until then, it's a bit of a mystery - and either way, I hope you enjoy your free XP gains.
