It looks like Pokémon Go is planning something big in New York City on Thursday for the 10th anniversary

Pokémon Go's 10th anniversary date of 6th July has come and gone with surprisingly little from Niantic itself, save for some anniversary artwork from Yusuke Kozaki (as is tradition), and the continued run of 10th anniversary events which kicked off on Saturday.

However, it looks like the moment will be properly celebrated later in the week. A press release overnight from Niantic's PR team said there are plans for a "special broadcast" on Thursday, 9th July, something that was also mentioned by the official account on X / Twitter.

Here's what the comms said:

Save the date! In celebration of the 10th anniversary, Pokémon GO is hosting a special anniversary broadcast on July 9.

Trainers from around the world including those who were among the first to experience the game in 2016, longtime players who have been catching Pokémon for the past decade and those who are just beginning their adventure, are invited to tune in and celebrate together.

Additional details on where to watch and when to tune in will be shared via Pokémon GO social channels (Facebook, X) on July 9. Throughout the day, several notable content creators will also be going live to join in on the festivities.

As for where this will take place, one content creator in attendance - streamer j0beats - mentioned the event will be in New York City.

This lines up with an event seemingly issued to members of the community back in June. Named the "Pokémon Go 10th Anniversary Celebration", one post mentioned special raids, a musical performance, and that it will be "somewhere in Manhattan" on 9th July.

What could be planned? Well, this is speculation on my part, but could Niantic / Scopely Explore be attempting to recreate the moment in the announcement video over a decade ago where players are battling Mewtwo in Times Square? It'll be fitting if so, especially since Unity Raids - a feature where players hold their phones in the air to catch Pokémon - debuted with the arrival of Mega Mewtwo in Go Fest: Tokyo.

This is also somewhat backed up by the aforementioned anniversary artwork, which prominently features Mewtwo in a Times Square-style setting:

Whether Niantic / Scopely Explore is actually planning a Times Square takeover, or is simply hosting the event somewhere in New York to celebrate, remains to be seen. Either way, it should be worth tuning in for, if only for a giveaway on Twitch, which includes 10 Lucky Eggs, 10 XL Rare Candy and more.

Times for the stream have yet to be revealed, but all signs point to it taking place sometime during the East Coast Americas time zone. I'll update this article when we know more.
