'Genetic Mastery' is a Timed Research quest during Pokémon Go Fest 2026.
Running between 10am on Saturday, 11th July to 7pm on Sunday, 12th July, it's where you can get your hands on a free Mega Mewtwo X or Y.
Here's every quest step in the 'Generic Mastery' Timed Research in Pokémon Go, so you know what you're up against over the weekend.
Also, know there is a second set of research in the form of Zeraora's 'A Thunderous Discovery' - though this can be completed at your own pace - and that there's more chances to get Mega Mewtwo Energy over the weekend.
Pokémon Go 'Genetic Mastery' quest steps
What follows are the 'Genetic Mastery' quest steps, available for free by logging in during Go Fest Global 2026 event hours. As Timed Research, it must be completed before 7pm local time on Sunday, 12th July.

'Genetic Mastery' step 1 of 6
- Spin 5 PokéStops or Gyms (6 Pinap Berries)
- Make a Nice Throw (26 Poké Balls)
- Make 3 Great Throws (6 Nanab Berries)
End rewards: 2,026 Stardust, Bouffalant encounter, 2,026 XP
'Genetic Mastery' step 2 of 6
- Power up Pokémon 10 times (1 Fast TM)
- Use a Fast TM (1 Charged TM)
- Use a Charged TM (3 Potions)
End rewards: 26 Gengar Candy, Gengar encounter, 6 Gengar XL Candy
'Genetic Mastery' step 3 of 6
- Catch 20 difference species of Pokémon (2 Incubators)
- Hatch 2 Eggs (100 Gengar Mega Energy)
- Mega Evolve a Pokémon (1 Star Piece)
End rewards: 3 Rare Candy, Tropius encounter, 2,026 Stardust
At this point you have to make a choice between Mega Mewtwo X or Y.

- Catch 3 Psychic-type Pokémon (2,026 XP)
- Catch 10 Pokémon (26 Great Balls)
- Complete 6 Field Research tasks (2,026 Stardust)
End rewards: 300 Mega Mewtwo Energy (X or Y, depending on your choice), Mewtwo encounter, 26 Mewtwo Candy
'Genetic Mastery' step 5 of 6
- Mega Evolve Mewtwo (2,026 Stardust)
- Power up Psychic-type Pokémon 10 times (26 Ultra Balls)
- Win 3 raids using a team of all unique Pokémon species (1 Super Incubator)
End rewards: 2,026 Stardust, 6 Mega Mewtwo stickers, 2,026 XP

- Claim reward (2,026 XP)
