Mega Mewtwo is the headline addition to Pokémon Go Fest 2026.
Though the option to Mega Evolve a Mewtwo is visible to all players - check a Mewtwo in your collection if you don't believe me - only those with an in-person Go Fest ticket can actually unlock Mega Mewtwo X and Y ahead of a global rollout later in the summer.
Here's how to get Mega Mewtwo in Pokémon Go - whether that's from an in-person event or Go Fest: Global - plus the Mewtwo Mega Evolution level requirements, and how Mewtwo Mega Energy works.

How to get Mega Mewtwo in Pokémon Go
Mega Mewtwo will be available to everyone for free during Go Fest: Global in July, with those attending in-person Go Fest events in May and June receiving early access. The dates and specific rollouts are as follows:
- In-person Go Fest events (Tokyo, Chicago, Copenhagen in May-June):
- Completing research from the City Explorer ticket or weekend ticket for a Mewtwo with one Mega Evolution unlocked (X or Y)
- Completing a Mewtwo Super Mega Raid hosted at the end of the park session
- Go Fest: Global (11th to 12th July):
- Completing branching research for a Mewtwo with one Mega Evolution unlocked (X or Y)
- Facing Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y in Super Mega Raids for Mega Energy

Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions - Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y. Go Fest attendees get access to branching research which rewards a Mewtwo that can automatically Mega Evolve into their chosen evolution. If you want to get the other Mega Evolution, then you must participate in Super Mega Raids.
When do Mega Mewtwo Raids release?
Mega Mewtwo Raids will appear at Go Fest: Global during the 11th to 12th July weekend, where you can face either Mega Mewtwo X or Y in Super Mega Raids and acquire the respective Mega Energy.
That said, technically, the first Mega Mewtwo Raids are during in-person Go Fest events in Tokyo, Chicago and Copenhagen in May to June, where there will be a short period of Super Mega Raids at the end of each park session, but these are only available to ticketed attendees in person, and are not Remote Raid eligible.
There are also regular Mewtwo Raids during these in-person events which you can Remote Raid into, but these do not reward Mega Energy for Mewtwo. Players who Remote Raid to these raids are not eligible for a location background specific to that event, either - you need a ticket for a chance of that appearing.
This means though you may see Mewtwo Raids ahead of Go Fest: Global, they will not drop Mega Mewtwo Energy, and are only useful for getting Candy, XL Candy, and catching a Mewtwo without a location or special background.
How to get Mewtwo Mega Energy in Pokémon Go
The two confirmed Mewtwo Mega Energy sources in Pokémon Go are as follows:
- Completing Mega Mewtwo Raids (X or Y will drop Mega Energy specific to that branching evolution) during Go Fest: Global in 11th to 12th July (for all players), and likely at the end of the Go Fest Tokyo, Chicago and Copenhagen weekend park sessions (ticketed attendees only)
- Walking Mewtwo as your Buddy (drops 100 Mega Energy per 20km) when Mega Mewtwo is unlocked in your Pokédex
- Walking will reward both X and Y Mega Energy, but only if both are unlocked in your Pokédex first
In other words, Mewtwo Mega Energy is only available to those who attend Go Fest: Tokyo, Go Fest: Chicago, or Go Fest: Copenhagen, where the ability to start receiving Mega Energy for Mewtwo is possible once the Pokédex entry is unlocked, and by participating in local-only raids at the end of their weekend park sessions.
Though it's possible Go Fest: Global will feature Timed / Special / Field Research with Mega Mewtwo X or Y Energy as a reward, practically, Mega Mewtwo Raids during Go Fest: Global will be the main source of Mega Energy, especially when the initial requirement to Mega Evolve is rather steep...
Mewtwo Mega Evolution level requirements
The requirement to Mega Evolve Mewtwo is 7,500 Mega Energy for the first level, with more Mega Energy required to level it to the highest Mega Level.
Here's the full set of requirements (thanks pinakasuperman on reddit for confirming these):
- Mega Level 1 (Base): 7,500 (mandatory)
- Mega Level 2 (High): 800 (optional)
- Mega Level 3 (Max): 2,640 (optional)
- Mega Level 4 (Super Max): 7,640 (mandatory)

This means you need 15,140 Mewtwo Mega Energy minimum for each X and Y Mega Evolution, provided you don't mind unlocking Level 2 and 3 through Mega Evolving and waiting for cooldowns, or 18,580 Mewtwo Mega Energy if you want to reach Level 4 immediately.
However, to help, there are a few ways to evolve Mega Mewtwo without spending Mega Energy...
How to Mega Evolve Mewtwo for free
First, as with all Mega Evolutions, Mega Levels can be increased for free by Mega Evolving them over and over when each 'cooldown' period ends, provided you have Mega evolved it once previously. The final level, meanwhile, always requires Mega Energy, which is 7,640 Mega Energy in Mega Mewtwo X or Y's case.
Additionally, all Mewtwo caught after a Mega Mewtwo raid during a Go Fest event (for those with a Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen ticket, or Global) have the first Mega X or Mega Y level unlocked automatically, and a chance of level two or three also being unlocked.
This means don't have to worry about that initial steep Mega Energy requirement for Mewtwo caught at Go Fest 2026. However, this only applies to either the Mega Mewtwo X or Y evolution, with the one you unlock being dependent on the raid you completed.

In other words, Go Fest can help you get an initial Mega Mewtwo X or Y, but you then still have to get Mega Energy for the other Mewtwo Mega Evolution. And if you'd rather Mega Evolve a Mewtwo caught before Go Fest? That then requires 7,500 Mega Energy for each initial X and Y evolution.
So, unless you have a sentimental Mewtwo in your collection, it's worth catching a new one during a Go Fest weekend (ideally one that's shiny and / or has a location or special background) to give you a leg up on one of the X or Y evolutions. From there, you can participate in Mega Mewtwo Raids or walk Mewtwo as your Buddy to get the remaining Mewtwo Mega Energy you need.
Which Mewtwo can Mega Evolve?
Finally, if you do have a prior Mewtwo in your collection you'd prefer to Mega Evolve, know that almost all in your existing Mewtwo in your collection have the potential to do so, provided you have enough Mega Energy.
The two exceptions, however, are Armored Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo - neither of which can Mega Evolve.
If you aren't sure, go to your Mewtwo's stats screen, and see if the option to Mega Evolve is available. If it appears, then that Mewtwo can be Mega Evolved provided you have the energy.
