Mega Mewtwo X or Y choose a path in Pokémon Go: which is better?

There's one clear winner, but it's arguable it doesn't matter if you're raiding a lot this weekend.

The Mega Mewtwo X or Y choose a path choice is something you'll need to make during Pokémon Go Fest Global 2026.

Taking place during the 'Genetic Mastery' Timed Research quest, you have to make a decision between the two Mega Evolutions based on very little info.

Thankfully, this guide can help you make an informed choice of whether to pick Mega Mewtwo X or Y - and thankfully, there's a clear winner.

Know that Mega Mewtwo isn't the only quest-based encounter this weekend, with Mythical Zeraora in 'A Thunderous Discovery' also up for grabs.

Which is better: Mega Mewtwo X or Y?

Running between 10am on Saturday, 11th July to 7pm on Sunday, 12th July, you have to make a choice between Mega Mewtwo X or Y as part of the 'Genetic Mastery' Timed Research.

There's a couple of things to note before making a decision:

In summary, this quest is a way of getting a free Mewtwo with either Mega Evolution unlocked, but you'll still be able to get the other choice by collecting Mewtwo Mega Energy from Super Mega Raids.

So which should you pick? First, if you can't do any Super Mega Raids on a particular day (X only appears on Saturday, and Y on Sunday), then simply choose the one you won't get so you have one of each.

Otherwise, know the best choice out of the two is Mega Mewtwo Y.

This is because it has better attack stats and higher CP, making it the best Psychic-type attacker in the game by some margin. That said, X is no slouch, ranking behind it in second, and has the added benefit of being a dual Psychic- and Fighting-Type (though as a Fighting-Type attacker is overshadowed by Mega Lucario). But know that Mega Mewtwo Y is a stronger Psychic-Type attacker overall.

The other consideration here is the Candy bonus when catching Pokémon, with X boosting Fighting-type Candy as well as Psychic-type Candy, so it's a nice to have unlocked for that purpose, whether that's on a different Mewtwo, or this one by unlocking it later with Mewtwo Mega Energy.

Whatever you choose, learn how to get extra Mega Mewtwo Energy this weekend (and beyond) with our dedicated guide - and remember you can always use a Gold Bottle Cap or Silver Bottle Cap to boost its stats if they are poor.
